USSF "D" Coach License

The "D" License course is only administered and instructed by State Soccer Association. REGISTER TODAY

The National "D" license is a 36 to 40-hour course designed for the experienced coach who has already earned a National "E" license. The focus of this course is to improve a coach's ability to positively influence individual players and teams.

What are the key components of the "D" License course?

* Develop the core coaching competencies necessary to effectively teach the 13-14 year old athlete and team.
* Understand the characteristics and needs of an athlete in the Intermediate Stage of U.S. Soccer's Athlete Development Model.
* Build on the foundation of knowledge and experience to proceed through the sequence of coaching development courses.

What are the specific target outcomes of the "D" License course?

* Teach the Principles of Play in a training environment. (7v7 to 9v9).
* Apply the Principles of Play to functional group roles in a full team system.
* Plan a sequence of training and weekly cycles to complete a season plan.

The "D" License is a four-phase process. Advanced planning is critical to a coach's ability to successfully complete all four phases. We encourage our "D" License Candidates to pre-register 1-3 months in advance of the scheduled Group Instruction, first weekend.

US Soccer "D" Coaching Curriculum

Coach License Phase I. II. III.

Preparation Phase - includes the completion of pre-course assignments

Instructional Phase (14 to 18 hrs.) -includes individual candidate feedback, classroom discussion, field sessions lead by the instructor(s) and 1 field session conducted by each candidate

  • Held over 1 weekend
  • Candidate has one-on-one session to review Preparation Phase with Instructor
  • Participate actively in classroom discussions and field sessions led by Instructor (not graded on playing ability)
  • Create and present Practice Coaching session
  • Candidates selects 5 practice sessions for Deliberate Phase

Deliberate Practice Phase -provides the candidates with the opportunity to develop their ideas about the coaching process in their local environments

  • Minimum of 10 weeks and a maximum of 18 months
  • Conduct a minimum of 5 team training sessions with 5 different session plans (Deliberate Practice Topics PDF)
  • Write a self-analysis of each of the 5 sessions, using the Self-Analysis Form
  • Submit those 5 sessions with your self-evaluation to Alaska Youth Soccer, 2 weeks in advance of Phase 4
Coach License Phase IV.

Performance Review Phase (14 to 18 hrs.) Final coaching assessment weekend, which includes classroom/ field sessions and practical testing. Candidates must wait a minimum of 10 weeks before attending.

  • Held over 1 weekend
  • Candidate has one-on-one session to review Deliberate Practice Coaching with Instructor
  • Participate actively in classroom discussions and field sessions led by the Instructor
  • Create and present Final Coaching session

The "D" License consists of theoretical (classroom) and practical (field) instruction on teaching the four components of soccer; technique, tactics, fitness and psychology; as they relate to games component, designed to improve the pedagogical skills of participating coaches and prepare candidates for the US Soccer national coaching schools.

License includes a formal testing process to qualify coaches for the national coaching schools. Coaches are assessed on their ability to create and implement a written lesson plan and license is based on coaching 11-a-side soccer.

There are Three Possible Outcomes for "D" License Candidates:

  • Coaches can be assessed as capable of succeeding at the national coaching schools and awarded a "National" pass.
  • Coaches can be assessed as "not ready" for the national coaching schools and awarded a "State" pass. Coaches who wish to proceed to the national coaching schools can retest at a future "D" License course after 3 months.
  • Coaches who fail to complete the course requirements or who fail to demonstrate the minimum competencies to pass the course are not awarded the "D" License, National or State

Schedules- vary due to facility availability - Schedule will be emailed to candidates prior to the course
Wait Period- the candidate must wait a minimum of 10 weeks between the first and second weekends
Digital Coaching Center (DCC)
The U.S. Soccer's Digital Coaching Center (DCC), a state-of-the art online educational platform. The DCC allows coaches to create a personal profile, register for courses, communicate with technical staff, take part in online courses, create and build practice session plans with an online graphics tool, download the US Soccer Curriculum, access a wonderful library of age-appropriate soccer activities and archives of U.S. Soccer training sessions.
