Five Things to Know About the Grassroots Pathway Coaching Initiative
The new Grassroots Licensing Courses, which replace the F and E License Courses, offer an a-la-carte approach meant to empower coaches with education that is relevant to their specific coaching needs. The Grassroots Licenses will help coaches ensure fun, enjoyable, and developmentally appropriate environments for their players.
To undergo the 4v4 Online Course, users must have completed the Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module. Below you will find a list of steps to help you log in or create an account in the DCC (if you currently do not have a profile), complete the free Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module and register for the 4v4 Online Course.
How to access and take U.S. Soccer's Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module:
  1. Visit U.S. Soccer's Digital Coaching Center (DCC).
  2. Sign up (free of charge) or log-in to your DCC profile.
  3. Select "Courses" from the top menu.
  4. Under "Available Courses", select "Grassroots" then "Begin Course" to launch the introductory module.
  5. Complete U.S. Soccer's Introduction to Grassroots Coaching.
How to access and take U.S. Soccer's Grassroots 4v4 Online License:
  1. Visit U.S. Soccer's Digital Coaching Center (DCC).
  2. Sign up (free of charge) or log-in to your DCC profile.
  3. Select "Courses" from the top menu.
  4. Under "Available Courses", select "Grassroots Courses", "Online Courses", then "4v4 Course"

Grassroots Licenses Detail:
Designed to inspire and empower coaches throughout the Grassroots landscape, these practical courses offer education that is relevant to individual coaching needs.
  • 7v7: Created for U10 and U9
  • 9v9: Created for U12 and U11
  • 11v11:Created for U13 and above
By completing the Grassroots Pathway with the addition of the 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11 online grassroots courses, coaches of all levels now have the ability to obtain the tools to lead players in the proper environment.
4v4 In-Person Course Details:
The 4v4 In-Person Course is a four-hour course that builds on the principles covered in U.S. Soccer's Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module. Specifically, candidates will learn more about U.S. Soccer's Grassroots Coaching Education Philosophy, Play-Practice-Play Methodology, the Six Tasks of a Coach, and the characteristics of players aged 6-8. The course will also ask each candidate to reflect on their experiences to develop action steps for personal growth.
Eligibility Requirements:
To register for the 4v4 In-Person Course, candidates must be at least 16 years old* and have completed U.S. Soccer's Introduction to Grassroots Coaching module.
7v7 In-Person Course Details:
The 7v7 In-Person Course is a four-hour course that builds on the principles covered in U.S. Soccer's Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module. Specifically, candidates will learn more about U.S. Soccer's Grassroots Coaching Education Philosophy, Play-Practice-Play Methodology, the Six Tasks of a Coach, and the characteristics of players aged 9-10. The course will also ask each candidate to reflect on their experiences to develop action steps for personal growth.

9v9 In-Person Course Details:

11v11 In-Person Course Details:
The 11v11 In-Person Course is a four-hour course that builds on the principles covered in U.S. Soccer's Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module. Specifically, candidates will learn more about U.S. Soccer's Grassroots Coaching Education Philosophy, Play-Practice-Play Methodology, the Six Tasks of a Coach, and the characteristics of players aged 13 and older. The course will also ask each candidate to reflect on their experiences to develop action steps for personal growth.
Eligibility Requirements:
To register for the 11v11 In-Person Course, candidates must be at least 16 years old* and have completed U.S. Soccer's Introduction to Grassroots Coaching module.
National D License Course Details:
The National D License is a 40 to 45-hour course, held over two weekends, at minimum 4 weeks apart, designed for the grassroots coach who meets the prerequisites outlined below. The focus of this course is to facilitate the improvement of the candidates in the Six Tasks of a Coach across all four game models (4v4, 7v7, 9v9, 11v11) with a particular emphasis on Coaching Training Sessions. Candidates that register for this course are expected to attend both meetings.
Eligibility Requirements:
A unique combination of three of the eight Grassroots Licenses now formally represent the prerequisite to progress to the U.S. Soccer D License. Specifically, candidates must have completed a minimum of three grassroots courses, in the form of two in-person courses and one online course:
  • Two in-person courses (one of which must be the 11v11)
  • One online course across any of the four levels (4v4, 7v7, 9v9, 11v11)
Coaching candidates who have earned the E or F License will have the following opportunities to use those certifications toward the D License prerequisites:
  • U.S. Soccer E License + Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module
  • U.S. Soccer F License + Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module + 11v11 in-person license + one other in-person license
