Alaska Grassroots Referee Initiative

Calling Referees Across Alaska

Alaska Youth Soccer Association (AYSA) will be kicking off the Alaska Grassroots Referee Initiative for the 2020 summer season. With the good news that youth soccer players can start the process of Return to Play across Alaska the impact of COVID-19 on soccer programs has been felt in our part of the world on many levels. Overall, it looks like the Alaska Youth Soccer and Affiliate Clubs are starting to make great strides to return to a new normal. In this extremely challenging environment, it is critical that our return to pre-pandemic life happens safely throughout our programs including preparing our certified referees for future matches on the pitch. Alaska has a serious shortage of certified referees at this time and until we are able to build our referee pool the shortage will be felt across the state.

The Alaska Grassroots Referee Initiative is an excellent promotion for affiliate clubs and leagues as they recruit and mentor new youth officials. The Initiative will sponsor youth 19 years of age and younger who would like to become an entry level soccer referee. Alaska Youth Soccer is calling for the soccer community for continued support and donations. We are in need of youth players who would like to be certified and in need of coaches, parents and community members who support the ambitions of these players by assisting with their cost of certification ($30) and the purchase of their USSF Starter referee kit ($60) or by making a general donation to the Alaska Grassroots Referee Initiative.

Getting Started

The easiest way to get started is to contact your District Referee Administrator. Contact info for all Alaska referee administrators can be found at the Alaska Soccer Referee Association Contact Us page. If an administrator is currently not listed for your region, contact the State Youth Referee Administrator.

The Alaska Soccer Referee Association website,, has many other resources for referees as well.

Please note: The Alaska Grassroots Referee Initiative's goals are to offer multiple trainings and mentorship opportunities throughout the year while new officials gain experience officiating, working with a team, and with game management at the local, state, and regional levels. New Referees MUST complete ALL steps of the certification course, attend the field training, and receive their new USSF ID number to be eligible. The Alaska Grassroots Referee Initiative is an excellent promotion for member clubs and leagues as they recruit and mentor new youth officials.
